I am running a number of Exchange Servers in a hosted hyper-v environment. I do complete VHD backup nightly. So I needed a good way to manage the growing Exchange Server logs. After a lot of searching I found this straight forward way to deal with the logs.
How to Truncate the Exchange transaction logs manually.
Login to the Exchange mailbox server.
Open the Exchange management shell (EMS).
Open the Exchange management console (EMC).
In the EMC, stop the database that you want to truncate the logs for.
In EMS, run the command: eseutil /MH “Drive:\Database Path\Mailbox store.edb”
In the output, it will tell you what the database state is. If it says “Clean Shutdown”, you can move all of the logs to another directory. The logs you want to move start with EDB followed by a 5 digit hexadecimal number.
In the EMS, start the database and test.
You can delete the log that you moved in a day or two after you a confident that all is running well.
